  • graffiti is a part of mathematics
  • graffiti artists are passionate, skilled, and community-oriented
  • began in Ancient Rome
  • urban graffiti came from New York City
  • the goal was to have one's name in as many places as possible
  • gained fame from name being found
  • permanent markers were originally used 
  •  now spray cans are a more popular option
  • artists would try to out do each other
  • stopped using their names because they didn't want to get in trouble with the police
  • became more complex using lots of vocabulary words
  • "style wars" -1970
  • people would work together to make their artwork more known
  • most graffiti is not gang related
  • NYC graffiti became world famous
  • the 70's were the golden age of subway graffiti
  • they had to deal with the police patrolling the subways
